A Black Woman in Internal Comms: Why It’s Time to Share My Voice

I almost didn’t write this post today.

It’s MLK Day ✊🏾, a day dedicated to honoring the legacy of a man who championed justice, equity, and action. It’s also the U.S. Presidential Inauguration 🇺🇸—a moment that often highlights both unity and division. Two days, seemingly at odds, falling on the same date.

And yet, here I am—realizing that this juxtaposition is exactly why I can’t let fear, doubt, or inaction hold me back any longer.

I’ll just say it plainly: I am a Black woman in tech 💻. I specialize in internal communications and employee engagement 💬—fields that shape how people experience work, feel valued, and stay connected. And yet, as I look around, I don’t see many people who look like me in this space. I see even fewer sharing their professional experiences, insights, and strategies on platforms like LinkedIn.

That changes today. 🚀

For more than a decade, I’ve worked in the trenches of internal communications, employee engagement, and workplace culture 🌍—helping organizations communicate with clarity, build high-performing teams, and create workplaces where employees don’t just show up, but thrive 🌱.

I’ve led employee engagement initiatives for global companies 🌎, launched impactful internal communication strategies 📢, built programs that connect and empower employees across continents 🤝, and co-led efforts to foster inclusion and belonging 💡. My work spans consulting, digital transformation, and big data tech—industries that are constantly evolving, just like the way we communicate.

I’ve also experienced firsthand what it’s like to navigate these spaces as someone who doesn’t always see themselves reflected in leadership, in decision-making rooms, or in the broader conversation about the future of work.

And yet, I’ve spent years learning from incredible thought leaders like Joana Parsons, Advita Patel, Jenni Field, Rachel Miller, and Emily Hecker. Their voices have influenced my work, my thinking, and my confidence. But I also know that my perspective—shaped by my career, my lived experiences, and my deep expertise—has value too. And if I don’t share it, who will?

So, after battling impostor syndrome (and, if we’re being honest, a good dose of procrastination ⏳), I’m taking the leap. This year, I’m committing to showing up. To sharing actionable insights, bold ideas, and real talk about what it takes to build thriving workplaces where people feel heard, included, and engaged.

This is my first step. Let’s build something together. 💡💪🏾
